Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council Elections Set for April 12

The upcoming elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) on April 12 are shaping up to be highly competitive, with major political parties including the BJP, Tipra Motha Party, CPI(M), and Congress fielding candidates. A total of 173 candidates are contesting for 28 seats, following a failed seat-sharing agreement. The elections will see a diverse range of candidates, with the counting of votes set for April 17. This election is crucial as it follows the TMP's previous victory in 2021, where they secured 18 seats.
 

Upcoming Elections in Tripura


Agartala, March 29: The elections for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are scheduled for April 12, featuring a competitive landscape with multiple parties fielding candidates.


Both the BJP and the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) have chosen to contest all 28 council seats independently after failing to reach an agreement on seat sharing. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) and Congress are competing for 27 and 25 seats, respectively.


Additionally, the BJP's ally, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), has nominated candidates for 24 seats, setting the stage for a diverse electoral contest. The total electorate for the tribal council is 962,798.


A total of 173 candidates are vying for the 28 available seats in the TTAADC.


According to Anurag Sen, the secretary of the state election commission, "A total of 173 candidates from various parties, including BJP, TMP, IPFT, CPI(M), Congress, and independents, are in the race for the 28 seats."


The deadline for withdrawing nomination papers was March 28.


"We received 181 nomination papers for the 28 seats in the tribal council elections, but after eight withdrawals on March 28, the number of candidates has been reduced to 173," he added.


In the previous elections held in 2021, the TMP secured 18 seats and formed the council, while the BJP, in alliance with the IPFT, won nine seats.


The elections for the 28-member TTAADC will take place on April 12, with the counting of votes scheduled for April 17.
