Agartala, Jul 4: The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, inaugurated the first MEMU train service in the Northeast on Saturday, connecting Agartala with Assam's Sribhumi.
This new MEMU train can accommodate up to 3,600 passengers and is designed with safety features such as CCTV cameras and a GPS tracking system to enhance the travel experience.
During the launch event in Agartala, Saha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their efforts in improving railway connectivity in the region.
He highlighted that this service marks a significant milestone in connecting the two cities within the Northeast.
Additionally, Saha mentioned that the railway network in Tripura has been extended to Sabroom, the southernmost area of the state.
"Once the Maitri Setu is operational, Sabroom will act as a gateway to Bangladesh, linking it with Ramgarh. The railway link from Agartala to Akhaura in Bangladesh will soon be functional, allowing seamless travel for people on both sides," he stated.
He also noted that the state government has plans to lay double tracks between Chandranathpur in Assam and Sabroom.
"The final location survey for the 263 km double line project has been completed, and the detailed project report is nearing completion. Once the double line is established, the frequency of trains to and from Agartala will increase. We are also looking to introduce services to cities like Jammu, Gaya, and Puri," he added.
Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury mentioned that currently, 18 trains, including 13 express and five DEMU services, are operational from Tripura.
Chowdhury reaffirmed the state administration's commitment to enhancing public infrastructure and ensuring that development benefits reach all segments of society through improved connectivity and governance focused on citizens.
