Agartala, March 16: On Monday, the Tripura government presented a tax-free budget amounting to Rs 34,212.31 crore for the fiscal year 2026-27.


Key Highlights from the Finance Minister

During the Assembly session, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy emphasized that the budget aims to establish a robust foundation for sustainable economic advancement, prioritizing infrastructure, digital innovation, rural job creation, and enhanced connectivity to realize the vision of 'Viksit Tripura' by 2047.


He described the budget as inclusive, noting that despite limited resources, the government has made efforts to cater to various sectors, including infrastructure, social commitments, and skill enhancement.


Capital Expenditure and Employment Generation

Roy proposed a capital expenditure of Rs 8,945.92 crore, reflecting a 13.19% increase from the previous year's budget, which is expected to create additional job opportunities within the state.


The budget signifies a 5.52% rise compared to last year's estimate of Rs 32,423 crore, although it anticipates a deficit of Rs 240.72 crore for the financial year.


Focus on Infrastructure and Education

To boost infrastructure development, the minister reiterated the proposed capital expenditure of Rs 8,945.92 crore, which is 13.19% higher than the last year's allocation.


Roy highlighted that enhancing infrastructure, attracting investments, generating employment, and advancing the health and tourism sectors are pivotal for the state's socio-economic progress.


Additionally, he announced plans to establish a technical university, a medical university, and a women's university to fortify the higher education landscape.


Commitment to Tribal Development

Roy assured that the government is dedicated to the welfare of indigenous communities in the state, allocating approximately Rs 15,000 crore from the total budget for tribal development initiatives.


He further mentioned that the state budget has more than doubled in size over the last decade, increasing from Rs 15,000 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 34,212.31 crore in 2026-27, all without introducing new taxes.

Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed his support for the budget, highlighting the government's focus on capital expenditure to bolster the state's economy.
