New Healthcare Initiative in Tripura

Tripura, Mar 5: Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that the state has entered into a partnership with the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) to establish a super-specialty hospital in Hapania, located in the West Tripura district.

"We have formalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GNRC, a prominent medical institution based in Guwahati, to utilize the vacant land of Tripura Jute Mills Ltd for this project. A team from our department has already visited GNRC to assess their infrastructure and available facilities," he informed the media.

While the Chief Minister, who also oversees health matters, refrained from providing further details about the MoU with GNRC, he emphasized ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and workforce at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and Agartala Government Medical College.

"We have previously signed an MoU with AIIMS, New Delhi, to improve healthcare services at GBP hospital. Following their recommendations, we plan to increase the number of ICU beds from 156 to 326. Additionally, GBP hospital is now directly linked to AIIMS, New Delhi, via telemedicine to offer better medical services to our patients," he stated.

On Thursday, a 16-bed dedicated ICU for patients suffering from severe respiratory issues and a fully equipped ICU in the trauma center were inaugurated at GBP hospital.

Furthermore, Saha mentioned that the state Cabinet has deliberated on establishing a medical university to oversee medical colleges and institutions within Tripura, aiming to minimize referral cases by optimizing and upgrading existing medical facilities.

Currently, Tripura boasts three medical colleges that provide a total of 450 MBBS seats and 119 postgraduate courses.

Previously, the government had also signed an agreement with Srija Hospitals and Research Institute, an institution based in Imphal, to create a super-specialty hospital and medical college in RK Nagar within the same district.
