Tripura CM Manik Saha Demands Justice for Anjel Chakma's Murder
Chief Minister's Assurance on Justice
Agartala, Jan 14: Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, announced on Wednesday that his counterpart from Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has guaranteed that those responsible for the murder of Anjel Chakma will face justice.
During his visit to the Chakma family in Nandannagar, located on the outskirts of Agartala, Saha revealed that the assailants initially targeted Anjel's younger brother, Micheal Chakma, who is currently studying in Dehradun.
"In an attempt to protect his brother, Anjel confronted the attackers, resulting in severe injuries that ultimately led to his death after 17 days in a Dehradun hospital," Saha explained.
Describing the incident as "extremely unfortunate and distressing," Saha mentioned his conversation with Dhami regarding the case.
"The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand assured me that those who perpetrated this crime will not escape justice. The legal process will unfold as it should," he stated, adding that the police will eventually apprehend the absconding suspect.
Out of the six individuals implicated, five have been taken into custody, while the main suspect remains at large.
Saha also noted that he plans to visit Delhi for a meeting on January 19 and 20, coinciding with Dhami's visit to the capital.
"I intend to discuss the investigation's progress with him and will advocate for a more robust inquiry to ensure justice is served," he said.
Additionally, Anjel's father, Tarun Kanti Chakma, who serves as a BSF jawan in Manipur, expressed his wish to be transferred to the BSF's Tripura Frontier headquarters at Salbagan.
"I advised him to send me a formal request, and the government will certainly consider it. Regarding their request for employment for Anjel's younger brother, I asked them to provide his bio-data," Saha added.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Anjel's family had called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the case.
During a meeting with Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma, Tarun Kanti Chakma expressed their concerns, stating that a month has passed since Anjel's death without any updates on the investigation.
"While we have heard that five individuals have been arrested, the main suspect is still evading capture. My family insists on a CBI investigation to expedite justice," he remarked.
Anjel, an MBA student from Pecharthal in Tripura, succumbed to injuries from a brutal attack on December 9, which his family claims was racially motivated.
On December 31, the Dehradun Police had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into Anjel Chakma's murder, although they reported no evidence of racial abuse thus far.
