Agartala, Sept 6: On Saturday, Chief Minister Manik Saha of Tripura announced that the BJP will participate in the forthcoming Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) in collaboration with its allies, the TIPRA Motha Party and the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT).

This declaration followed a meeting led by Union Home Minister Amit Shah with Saha and Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the founder of TIPRA Motha, aimed at resolving differences regarding electoral strategies and the regional party's demands for land rights for indigenous communities.

The elections for 587 Village Committees within the TTAADC are scheduled for September 28, having been postponed since 2016 for various reasons.

The TTAADC encompasses approximately two-thirds of Tripura's land area and is home to a significant portion of the state's indigenous population, making control over tribal politics vital for both the BJP and TIPRA Motha.

Speaking to reporters at the airport, Chief Minister Saha stated, “We convened with TIPRA Motha Party leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma and the BJP’s North East coordinator Sambit Patra at Amit Shah's residence in New Delhi on Friday, where we thoroughly discussed the tripartite agreement and our alliance for the upcoming elections.”

On September 4, 2024, the TIPRA Motha Party had entered into an agreement with the central and state governments aimed at the comprehensive development of the indigenous population in Tripura.

“During our meeting, it was agreed that the BJP, TIPRA Motha Party, and IPFT will collectively contest the Village Committee elections, with seat-sharing arrangements to be finalized soon,” he added.

In the previous TTAADC elections held in April, the BJP ran independently and suffered a significant defeat, with the TIPRA Motha Party securing 24 out of 28 seats.

Regarding the tripartite agreement's implementation, Dr. Saha assured that all matters would be addressed. “With the Village Committee elections for the tribal council underway, we will commence implementing the accord next month, addressing each aspect in phases,” he noted.

Previously, Pradyot Kishore of the TIPRA Motha Party had stated that no alliance would be formed without a formal commitment from the Centre regarding the accord's execution.
