Strengthening Northeast Connectivity

Agartala, Dec 23: Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, has emphasized the importance of effectively executing the Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) to enhance the multimodal corridors that connect the Northeast with the rest of India and neighboring regions.

During a meeting of the high-level task force focused on infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast, Saha stated, “The successful implementation of this project will significantly contribute to improving regional and international connectivity.”

This meeting was conducted virtually from Delhi, chaired by Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER).

Saha pointed out that the Northeast possesses vast development potential, especially in terms of infrastructure and communication systems.

He called for collaborative efforts to tackle the connectivity challenges faced by the Northeastern states across road, rail, air, and inland waterways, as well as in electricity, gas, and digital infrastructure.

Additionally, he stressed the need to identify key development areas, including regional infrastructure macro-grids, power, oil and natural gas, tourism, and border trade. The Chief Minister also presented a report detailing proposed strategies for advancement in these sectors.

The KMTTP is a strategic initiative between India and Myanmar, designed to connect India’s Northeast to the sea via Haldia, utilizing a mix of sea, river, and road routes through Myanmar.

This project establishes a link from Haldia to Sittwe Port, then to Paletwa via the Kaladan River, and subsequently by road to Zorinpui in Mizoram, effectively bypassing the congested Siliguri Corridor to enhance regional trade and development.

Senior officials from the DoNER Ministry and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma were also present at the meeting.
