Tripura and Assam Launch VB-GRAM G Scheme to Boost Rural Livelihoods

The newly launched VB-GRAM G scheme in Tripura and Assam aims to significantly boost rural employment and infrastructure. With an allocation of ₹1,040 crore for Tripura, the initiative addresses developmental gaps left by MGNREGA. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam has also announced the implementation of this programme, emphasizing its potential to strengthen rural livelihoods. This comprehensive approach is expected to transform the rural economy in both states.

Agartala, July 3: The central government has allocated ₹1,040 crore to Tripura for the newly initiated VB-GRAM G rural livelihood programme for the current fiscal year. This initiative is seen as a significant enhancement for rural employment and village infrastructure.

Significance of the Programme

Tripura's Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy emphasized that this programme is a crucial step towards bolstering the rural economy. He stated that it aims to fill developmental gaps that were not sufficiently addressed by the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Roy explained, "Projects like land leveling, mud drain construction, water conservation, and flood protection were not adequately included in the previous MGNREGA framework. The VB-GRAM G is tailored to meet the comprehensive developmental requirements of villages."

Response to Opposition Claims

The minister dismissed claims from opposition parties suggesting that the BJP-led government intends to phase out MGNREGA, asserting that the new programme will greatly benefit rural households in Tripura.

He noted, "Last fiscal year, the state received approximately ₹1,100 crore under MGNREGA. Now, the Centre has allocated ₹1,040 crore for the remaining nine months of this fiscal year, which is a significant amount for a small state like Tripura."

Wage Increase Under VB-GRAM G

Roy also pointed out the wage increase associated with the new scheme, stating that the daily wage rate in Tripura has risen from ₹240 to ₹300.

He remarked, "The opposition often criticized us regarding MGNREGA wage rates, but the state had no control over those revisions. With the launch of VB-GRAM G, the wage has been elevated to ₹300, which will directly benefit impoverished rural workers."

Launch Event and Assam's Participation

The minister participated in the launch event virtually from Rabindra Bhavan, while Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan officially inaugurated the scheme from Andhra Pradesh.

In a related development, Assam has also initiated the VB-GRAM G programme. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced its implementation across the state, emphasizing its focus on job creation and rural livelihoods.

In a social media post, the Chief Minister highlighted that the programme guarantees 125 days of employment, allocates 33% of benefits for women, and aims to enhance livelihood opportunities in rural regions.

"VB-GRAM G has been launched throughout Assam. It ensures 125 days of guaranteed employment and 33% women beneficiaries, leading to stronger rural livelihoods. With VB-GRAM G now in action, our villages are poised to gain from improved employment and enhanced livelihoods," the Chief Minister stated.
