Ahmedabad, Sep 3: Gaurang Vyas, a distinguished musician, composer, and singer from Gujarat, passed away in Ahmedabad on Thursday at the age of 87.
Prominent figures including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi expressed their heartfelt condolences.
As the son of the celebrated composer and Padma Shri awardee Avinash Vyas, Gaurang Vyas was a significant contributor to Gujarati cinema, folk music, and sugam sangeet.
His final journey will commence from his residence near Hirabaug Crossings in Ambawadi, Ahmedabad.
In a heartfelt message on social media, PM Modi expressed his sorrow over Vyas's passing and highlighted his immense contributions to Gujarati music.
"He carried forward the rich musical tradition established by his father, Avinash Vyas, and established his own unique identity in Gujarati music," Modi remarked.
He noted that Gujarat has lost a remarkable talent and that Vyas's contributions to the musical landscape will be cherished forever.
PM Modi also offered prayers for the peace of Vyas's soul and extended his sympathies to the musician's family and numerous fans.
Amit Shah referred to Vyas's passing as an "irreparable loss" for the Gujarati music community, reminiscing about the musician's extensive work in films and his numerous compositions that resonated with many.
He specifically mentioned one of Vyas's famous songs, 'Dikri To Parki Thapan', stating that such timeless compositions will keep his memory alive.
Shah prayed for divine strength for Vyas's family and admirers to cope with this loss.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel acknowledged Vyas's significant impact on Gujarati cinema, sugam sangeet, and folk music, stating that his melodious creations will forever resonate with music enthusiasts.
Patel described Vyas's death as a substantial loss to Gujarat's artistic community and prayed for peace for the departed and strength for his loved ones.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi also conveyed his condolences, recognizing Vyas as a veteran musician and singer.
Vyas was introduced to music at a young age, reportedly playing 'Vaishnav Jan' on the harmonium by the age of five.
Despite hailing from a prominent musical family, he initially pursued a different path, earning a diploma in mechanical engineering and working in an engineering firm in Mumbai before ultimately dedicating himself to music.
He began his career in Gujarati cinema as an assistant to his father, contributing to projects like 'Jesal Toral'.
Throughout his career, Vyas composed music for over 100 films, including notable works such as Ketan Mehta's 'Bhavni Bhavai', 'Maniyaro', 'Nasibni Balihari', 'Parki Thapan', 'Liludi Dharati', and 'Maiyarman Mandu Nathi Lagtu'.
He collaborated with some of India's most renowned playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur, Bhupinder Singh, and Prafull Dave.
His composition 'Dikri To Parki Thapan', performed by Lata Mangeshkar, remains one of his most celebrated works. Vyas's influence extended beyond films, as he composed over 500 pieces of sugam sangeet and created popular garba and devotional music.
His father, Avinash Vyas, was a pivotal figure in Gujarati cinema, having composed music for more than 190 films and receiving the Padma Shri in 1970.
Gaurang Vyas not only continued this musical legacy but also forged his own identity in both film and non-film music.
