Gopinath was a vital member of India's first-ever Test-winning team and played a significant role in the early days of the nation's international cricket journey.
A Glimpse into Gopinath's International Career
As per a statement from the BCCI, Gopinath participated in eight Test matches for India from 1951 to 1960. He made a remarkable debut, scoring 50 not out and 42 against England. During a time when Indian cricket was still establishing itself globally, he was part of the team that achieved India's first Test victory against England in 1952 in Madras (now Chennai), a milestone that changed the course of Indian cricket history.
Domestic Contributions and Achievements
In domestic cricket, Gopinath was a key player in Madras cricket, where he captained the team and significantly contributed to its development during the early years of Indian domestic competitions. He had an impressive first-class career, amassing 4,259 runs across 60 matches. Notably, he played a crucial role in Madras' first Ranji Trophy victory in the 1954-55 season, scoring a century in the final.

After retiring from playing, Gopinath took on the role of national selector, including serving as chairman, and later managed the Indian team during the 1979 tour of England.
