Tragic Loss in the Cricket Community

Dubai, July 8: Jay Shah, the Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Bismillah Jan Shinwari, an esteemed umpire from Afghanistan, who died at the age of 41.

Shinwari was a member of the ICC International Panel of Umpires and officiated in 25 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 21 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). He made his international debut in December 2017 during an ODI match between Afghanistan and Ireland held in Sharjah. His last international role was at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 in Al Amerat, Oman, earlier this February.

In his statement, Shah conveyed his condolences to Shinwari's family, stating, "Bismillah was a respected umpire, admired by players, colleagues, and officials. He was a familiar face on the international cricket scene and had a promising career ahead of him."

He further added, "His significant contributions to the sport will be greatly missed, and we are heartbroken by this loss. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time."

The Afghanistan Cricket Board also shared their condolences on social media, expressing their shock and sadness over Shinwari's passing. "The leadership, staff, and the entire AfghanAtalan family are mourning the loss of Bismillah Jan Shinwari, a valued member of Afghanistan’s elite umpiring panel. We are deeply saddened to announce his passing due to illness," they stated.

"Bismillah Jan was a dedicated servant of Afghan cricket. The Afghanistan Cricket Board extends its heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire Afghan cricket community."
