Tribal Beliefs Lead to Shocking Declarations of Death Over Crow Mating
Superstitions in the Modern Age
Jeypore: In a startling incident reflecting deep-rooted superstitions, two young men from a tribal community in Koraput district were mistakenly declared deceased by local villagers after they observed two crows mating, an act viewed as a bad omen according to traditional beliefs.
This unusual event unfolded in Patraguda village, located approximately 10 kilometers from Jeypore town. Reports indicate that the villagers, adhering to an ancient tribal superstition, believed that witnessing the mating of crows foretells misfortune and death.
The situation gained attention when a video capturing the incident circulated widely on social media on Thursday.
Following the declaration of death, the villagers performed symbolic last rites using effigies instead of actual bodies.
The mock funeral video has since gone viral, highlighting the persistence of such superstitions in certain tribal communities.
After returning from the cremation site, the villagers engaged in mourning rituals and feasting, consistent with local customs.
It was only after all rituals were completed that the two 'deceased' youths were brought back from their hiding place, showcasing the bizarre nature of these superstitious beliefs that overshadow rational thought.
Villagers also conducted a purification ceremony to counteract the supposed negative effects of the incident.
The community holds a firm belief that anyone who witnesses the mating of crows is destined to die.
