Treasure Hunt Initiated in Karnataka's Historic Lakundi Village
Karnataka Government Launches Treasure Search
On Friday, the Karnataka government commenced a treasure hunt in Lakundi, a historic village in Gadag district, following the discovery of gold jewelry during the construction of a house. The government has decided to conduct extensive excavations at the Kote Veerabhadreshwara temple complex located in the village. This treasure search will be a collaborative effort involving the tourism department, archaeology department, museum and heritage department, Lakundi Heritage Development Authority, and district administration. Authorities have brought in JCBs, trucks, and tractors for the excavation work. A designated area of 10 meters by 10 meters has been marked for this purpose, and the site has been officially notified for digging. An official involved in the project mentioned that 15 women and five men have been hired for the task.
Historical Significance of Lakundi
Lakundi is known for its rich heritage linked to rulers such as the Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Kalachuris, and Vijayanagara. Additionally, the village is associated with the renowned philanthropist Danachintamani Attimabbe. According to sources from the archaeology department, it is believed that gold coins were minted in Lakundi during ancient times. The decision to begin excavations was made after the discovery of a small copper vessel containing 470 grams of gold jewelry, which was found by a boy reportedly dating back 300 to 400 years. The boy handed over the treasure to the district administration and was honored for his find.
Potential for More Discoveries
Officials have indicated that the area is believed to be rich in buried treasures, including gold, silver, diamonds, pearls, corals, and other precious stones. Sources involved in the excavation have stated that Lakundi has historically been a prosperous center, and evidence suggests that significant material wealth may still be hidden beneath the ground.
