Amidst the challenges posed by escalating input costs in traditional farming, a forward-thinking farmer from Khnot village in the Sarkaghat subdivision of Himachal Pradesh has showcased that natural farming can be both lucrative and sustainable.

Sunil Kumar, who resides in Khnot village within the Gopalpur block, has successfully converted his nearly two-bigha plot into a flourishing example of diversified agriculture, generating an annual income ranging from ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh through chemical-free farming. His land now yields a variety of vegetables, cereals, and horticultural products, demonstrating that even small plots can yield significant profits when managed effectively.

He credits his achievements to lower cultivation expenses and enhanced soil fertility after moving away from chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, he employs natural farming methods utilizing indigenous cow-based bio-inputs, which have revitalized soil health and decreased reliance on costly external resources.

Last year, Sunil ventured into strawberry farming as an experimental crop, investing approximately ₹15,000, which resulted in nearly ₹70,000 in returns, netting him around ₹50,000 in profit. Motivated by this success, he is expanding his farm to include crops such as tomatoes, capsicum, okra, cucumbers, pumpkins, bottle gourds, bitter gourds, ginger, colocasia, elephant foot yam, maize, and wheat.

Agricultural officials noted that government-supported natural farming programs are assisting farmers in adopting eco-friendly practices by offering financial aid for indigenous cows, improvements to cattle sheds, and necessary tools for creating bio-inputs.

Sunil emphasizes that natural farming provides advantages beyond just increased profits. He stated, “The most significant benefit has been healthier soil and chemical-free produce,” highlighting that natural pest management techniques have made farming more sustainable while ensuring safer food for consumers.

He expressed optimism that more farmers will adopt natural farming, believing that this transition could enhance rural livelihoods, lower production costs, and foster long-term agricultural sustainability throughout the state.
