Hyderabad, July 20: A trainee officer from the Indian Police Service (IPS) at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) reportedly attempted suicide on Monday, just a day after being charged with sexually harassing a fellow female trainee.

Details of the Incident

The officer, Uday Krishna Reddy, allegedly ingested a toxic substance at a relative's home in Moti Nagar, Hyderabad. He was subsequently taken to a private hospital in SR Nagar, where he is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Prior to his suicide attempt, Reddy took to social media to assert that the allegations against him were unfounded and false. He expressed confidence in the legal system and emphasized the importance of accurate reporting by the media.

Allegations Against Reddy

The police initiated a case against him on Sunday following a complaint from a 30-year-old female trainee officer. She accused Reddy of harassment occurring between June 23 and July 10 during their training at the academy.

In her report filed at the Attapur Police Station, she claimed that Reddy sent her threatening messages and engaged in criminal intimidation. Additionally, he allegedly recorded a private video of her and shared it with her husband.

The harassment reportedly began on June 23, with Reddy sending sexually explicit messages via WhatsApp.

The complainant further stated that Reddy made inappropriate comments about her in front of other trainees and falsely accused her of having an affair with another trainee.

She also alleged that Reddy blackmailed her into revealing her personal messages, even taking her phone to his room and coercing her to provide the password.

Reddy is accused of recording her private video without consent and later sending it to her husband as a means of intimidation.

Legal Action Taken

Following the filing of the complaint, Reddy left the National Police Academy and went to stay with relatives.

The Attapur police have charged him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those related to criminal force against a woman, sexual harassment, voyeurism, stalking, and criminal intimidation, as well as sections of the IT Act concerning privacy violations and the transmission of explicit material.

Background of Uday Krishna Reddy

Originally from Ullapalem in Prakasam district, Reddy achieved an All India Rank of 350 in the Civil Service Examination last year, leading to his induction into the IPS. He began his career as a constable in 2013 after attending a government school.

After resigning from the police force in 2018 to focus on Civil Services, he faced setbacks in three attempts but persevered. In his fourth attempt, he secured a rank of 780 and joined the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), yet remained determined to don the IPS uniform. Ultimately, he succeeded in his training attempt, achieving the 350th rank.
