Violent Clashes in Negombo Prison

Colombo: Authorities have reported that the death toll from the violent incidents at a prison in Negombo, Sri Lanka, has tragically reached 25 as of Monday.

The unrest began on Sunday when two rival inmate factions clashed in the overcrowded facility. Further violence erupted on Monday as inmates seized firearms from the prison.

The clashes have resulted in 25 fatalities and over 100 injuries, according to reports from local news sources.

Initial investigations suggest that the violence stemmed from a conflict between inmates involved in drug trafficking and those opposing such activities.

In response to the escalating situation, security measures have been intensified, with the Police Special Task Force and riot control units deployed to restore order.

As part of the efforts to manage the unrest, three inmates were relocated to the Pallansena Prison Camp on Monday.

AC Gajanayake, the Media Spokesman for the Prisons Department, announced that a special investigation has been initiated into the events.
