Fatal Incident at Hydroelectric Project Site

Dehradun: A tragic incident occurred on Thursday at a hydroelectric project site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, resulting in the deaths of six individuals and injuries to 14 others after water and debris flooded a construction tunnel, as reported by officials.

Initial reports indicate that 22 workers were trapped within the tunnel. Rescue teams successfully evacuated 20 workers, but unfortunately, six were pronounced dead, while 14 others are receiving medical care at a local hospital.

Details regarding the status of the remaining two workers are currently unavailable.

The incident took place at the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) Limited's project site located in the Pipalkoti region, with construction managed by the Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), according to officials.

Uttarakhand's Chief Secretary, Anand Vardhan, previously informed that multiple workers were trapped due to the influx of water and debris into the tunnel of the Pipalkoti hydroelectric project.

Emergency responders, including police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), quickly arrived at the scene.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was dispatched from Rudraprayag to assist in the rescue efforts. Additionally, teams from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and the Army were deployed. District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar was present at the site, overseeing the operation.

In a statement on X, Chief Minister Dhami expressed his concern regarding the incident and instructed all agencies to expedite relief and rescue operations.

Vinod Kumar Suman, Secretary of the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, mentioned that the situation is being closely monitored from emergency operation centers, and more teams will be sent if necessary.
