Tragic Train Collision Claims Lives of Eight Elephants in Assam
Incident Overview
Nagaon/Guwahati: In a heartbreaking incident early Saturday morning, a herd of elephants was struck by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam's Hojai district, resulting in the deaths of eight elephants and leaving one injured, according to a forest official.
The collision caused five train coaches and the engine to derail; however, no passengers were reported injured, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
The accident occurred around 2:17 AM, as stated by the NFR representative.
Suhash Kadam, the divisional forest officer for Nagaon, reported that the incident took place in the Changjurai area of Hojai district.
Kadam and his team of forest officials have arrived at the scene to assess the situation.
Trains scheduled to travel through the affected Jamunamukh–Kampur section have been rerouted via the UP line, and restoration efforts are currently in progress.
