Tragic Train Accident in Assam Claims Lives of Eight Elephants

A heartbreaking train accident in Assam has led to the death of eight elephants after they were struck by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express. The incident occurred in Hojai district during the early hours of December 20. Fortunately, no passengers were injured, but five train coaches derailed. Forest officials are currently on-site to manage the situation and restore rail services. This tragic event highlights the ongoing challenges of wildlife and railway interactions in the region.
 

Devastating Incident in Assam

A tragic train accident occurred in Assam, where the morning of December 20 turned fatal for a herd of elephants. Late Friday night, a group of elephants was struck by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Hojai district, resulting in the death of eight elephants and injuring one more, as reported by a forest department official.


The spokesperson for the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) indicated that five coaches and the engine of the train derailed due to the incident, but fortunately, no passengers were harmed. The train met with the accident at 2:17 AM while en route to New Delhi.


According to Suhash Kadam, the divisional forest officer from Nagaon, the incident took place in the Changjurai area of Hojai district. Kadam and other forest officials have arrived at the scene. They mentioned that trains passing through the affected Jamunamukh-Kamapur section are being diverted, and efforts to restore rail traffic are ongoing. The Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express connects Sairang in Mizoram (near Aizawl) to Anand Vihar Terminal in Delhi.


Currently, forest and railway officials are collaborating on-site to clear the tracks, and train services in this section remain suspended.
