Goreswar, June 21: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a Class IX student lost her life after being struck by a train while attempting to cross a railway bridge at Dalongghat in Goreswar, Tamulpur. This unfortunate event has sparked protests from local residents, who attribute the accident to the long-standing delay in completing a bridge project that has been pending for over 15 years.
The victim, identified as Ananya Deka, was a student at Gurmow High School and lived in Gurmow village. She was returning home from tuition classes with two friends when the accident took place.
Witnesses reported that the trio was crossing the railway bridge when a train approached unexpectedly. Ananya was hit and died instantly, while her companions narrowly avoided the same fate.
As the community gathered at the scene, many expressed their anger over the unfinished bridge project, which was initiated in 2010 but remains incomplete.
An elderly resident raised concerns about accountability for the tragedy.
"It has been over 15 years, and the bridge is still not finished. The lack of infrastructure is costing us young lives as children cross these tracks daily for tuition," she lamented.
"Who will take responsibility for this girl's death? Her family had hopes for her future. What will happen to them now?" she added.
Residents from multiple villages have been forced to use the railway bridge for their daily travels due to the absence of alternative routes.
Following the accident, frustrated locals protested at the site, chanting slogans against Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary and local officials, demanding the swift completion of the long-delayed bridge.
According to residents, the bridge project was launched in 2010 after Mohilary laid its foundation stone, yet it remains unfinished more than a decade later, forcing children and locals to navigate the dangerous railway bridge.
One resident remarked, "It is now 2026, and the bridge is still not completed. No one seems to care about our struggles here."
Protesters claimed that their repeated requests to authorities over the years have resulted in minimal progress, despite the dangers faced by commuters.
It was also noted that Ananya had lost her father and was being raised by her stepmother.
"Who will take responsibility for her death? We demand the immediate completion of the bridge and improved transport facilities for our area. We also call on the railway authorities to assist the grieving family," he stated.
As of the time of this report, no official comments had been made by the BTC or railway authorities regarding the incident.
