Terror Attack in Kulgam District

A tragic incident has emerged from Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorists have targeted two laborers from other states in Kulgam district. One of the workers was killed on the spot, while the other sustained serious injuries. Following the attack, security forces have launched a large-scale cordon and search operation in the area.

Details of the Attack

According to reports, the shooting occurred on Friday evening in the village of Kelam, Kulgam. Police sources indicate that the assailants opened fire unexpectedly on the two non-local laborers. One of the victims, identified as Deepak, originally from Chhattisgarh, died at the scene. The other injured worker, Bhupendra, hails from Uttar Pradesh and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

Security Response

Immediately after the incident, police, army, and other security agencies initiated a cordon and search operation throughout the region. Additional security forces have been deployed to track down the attackers. Officials have stated that efforts to apprehend the terrorists are ongoing, with increased surveillance on all routes in and out of the area.

Recent Surge in Targeted Attacks

This attack marks the second targeted assault in the past ten days. Previously, a police officer was killed in Anantnag district in a similar attack, prompting security agencies to conduct extensive operations across the valley. Reports indicate that over three thousand suspects have been detained in Kashmir as part of these efforts to identify potential networks linked to terrorist activities and to enhance security measures.

Concerns Over Mass Detentions

However, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed concern regarding the mass detentions, warning that such actions could complicate the situation further. He emphasized the need to maintain security and law and order while also considering the interests of ordinary citizens.

Context of the Attack

Notably, this attack occurred during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, which attracts millions of pilgrims each year to pay their respects to Baba Barfani. Extensive security measures have been implemented to ensure the safe and peaceful conduct of the pilgrimage, including the deployment of an additional 670 companies of central paramilitary forces to bolster security and surveillance during the journey.
