Chennai/Karur: A tragic stampede occurred during a rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, resulting in the deaths of 29 individuals, as reported by Tamil Nadu's Health Minister Ma Subramanian.

The minister confirmed that 29 people were declared dead upon arrival at hospitals, with over 45 others receiving medical attention. In response to the incident, the Chief Minister convened a meeting with senior officials to assess the situation.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences, stating, "The tragic event at the political rally in Karur is profoundly saddening. My thoughts are with the bereaved families, and I wish them strength during this challenging time. I am also praying for the swift recovery of the injured."

Reports indicate that around 30 attendees fainted while Vijay was speaking, necessitating their urgent transport to medical facilities.

Chief Minister M K Stalin described the news from Karur as concerning, particularly following the hospitalization of numerous individuals.

During his address to the large crowd from his campaign vehicle, Vijay paused his speech when he noticed many supporters fainting and falling.

Many of those who collapsed had been waiting for hours to see Vijay, including children.

In an effort to assist, Vijay called for ambulances and threw water bottles into the crowd, also announcing that a child was missing. He urged the police to assist in the situation.

Despite the chaos, Vijay resumed his speech but concluded it abruptly as the stampede-like conditions escalated among the crowd.

The Chief Minister has directed Ministers Ma Subramanian, Anbil Mahesh, and the District Collector to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
