Tragic Stampede at Mansa Devi Temple: What Went Wrong?
Chaos Erupts at Mansa Devi Temple
Haridwar: A stampede occurred early Sunday morning at the Mansa Devi Temple in Uttarakhand, injuring numerous devotees.
The chaos was triggered by an overwhelming number of visitors at the temple during the holy month of Shravan, leading to severe overcrowding.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as individuals began to push each other while waiting in line, causing a rush that resulted in injuries.
Emergency response teams acted quickly, with medical personnel and ambulances arriving on the scene to transport the injured to local hospitals for urgent care.
Officials have stated that relief efforts are ongoing, and they are closely monitoring the situation.
Every year, Haridwar attracts a large number of pilgrims during Shravan, particularly at the famous Har Ki Pauri and Mansa Devi Temple.
However, this year’s event turned tragic due to the excessive crowd, highlighting ongoing concerns about managing large gatherings at religious sites.
This incident adds to a troubling trend of stampedes in India throughout 2025, with over 50 fatalities reported in similar occurrences at religious venues, train stations, and public events.
Earlier this year, a stampede at the Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala Hills resulted in six deaths and numerous injuries as worshippers rushed for tickets.
On January 29, another stampede during the Maha Kumbh at the Sangam area led to 30 deaths and 60 injuries as millions gathered for a sacred dip on Mauni Amavasya, a significant day in the Hindu calendar.
In a separate incident, 18 individuals lost their lives and many were injured at New Delhi Railway Station on February 15, primarily affecting Maha Kumbh pilgrims returning home.
Additionally, a stampede during the annual 'Lairai Jatra' at Shree Lairai Devi Temple in Goa on May 3 resulted in seven deaths and 80 injuries.
On June 4, a celebration turned deadly when 11 fans died in a stampede near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium during an IPL victory celebration.
Further updates regarding the situation in Haridwar are expected as authorities continue their assessment.
