Tragic Shooting in South Africa Claims Nine Lives: What We Know
Shooting Incident in West Rand
Johannesburg: A tragic shooting incident in South Africa's West Rand region has resulted in the deaths of at least nine individuals, with numerous others injured, as reported by local news outlets on Sunday, citing police sources.
Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a police spokesperson, confirmed that the shooting occurred at the KwaNoxolo Tavern located in the Tambo area of Bekkersdal, according to Times LIVE.
In addition to those specifically targeted at the tavern, several victims were shot indiscriminately while walking on the street by unidentified assailants.
This violent episode took place in a township near Johannesburg, which is the largest city and economic hub of South Africa.
Gauteng's Acting Police Commissioner, Fred Kekana, announced that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated regarding the shooting.
"We are currently in the process of gathering statements. Our national crime and management team is on-site," Kekana informed local media.
He noted that various specialized units have been dispatched to the location.
"The provincial crime scene management team has arrived, along with a team from the local criminal record center, our serious crime investigation unit, crime intelligence, and the provincial crime detective team," he added.
As of now, authorities have not determined the motive behind the shooting, and no arrests have been made.
This incident is part of a troubling trend of mass shootings that have plagued the nation in recent years.
Notably, this marks the second mass shooting reported in South Africa within the same month.
On December 6, a separate attack occurred at a hostel in Pretoria, where gunmen killed 12 people, including a three-year-old child.
That earlier shooting took place at a site believed to be operating as an illegal alcohol establishment.
During that incident, at least three unidentified gunmen reportedly opened fire randomly at a group of patrons, as stated by Brigadier Athlenda Mathe at the time.
