Tragic Self-Immolation of Student Sparks Outrage Over Campus Safety in Odisha
Protests Erupt Following Disturbing Incident
In Bhubaneswar, the tragic self-immolation attempt by a second-year BEd student from Fakir Mohan College in Balasore has ignited widespread protests and sorrow among students and parents throughout Odisha. The incident is reportedly linked to ongoing harassment by an assistant professor, with the college administration accused of failing to act on previous complaints.
Students have voiced their concerns, stating that many harassment cases on campuses remain unreported due to fears of reputational damage and lack of action from authorities. Sources indicate that the victim had previously alerted the principal about the inappropriate conduct of the assistant professor, yet no meaningful steps were taken.
Anandita Mishra, a student from BJB College, expressed her anguish, stating, “Self-immolation is a decision made in utter despair, when a student feels completely isolated and hopeless. When societal shame weighs heavily, and no support is available, some see no other option.” She highlighted the daily harassment faced by women on campuses, emphasizing the need for immediate action teams to address such issues effectively.
Subhalaxmi Jayasingh, a student at Rama Devi Women’s University, described the incident as a significant failure of educational institutions to provide a safe environment. She called for a transparent investigation to ensure justice for all women suffering in silence. Arpita Meher and Sharmistha Mallick echoed similar sentiments, urging for accountability and stricter measures against perpetrators of harassment.
