Ethnic Conflict Escalates in Manipur

The ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur has taken a horrifying turn once again. On the morning of April 7, a suspected rocket or mortar attack in a residential area of Bishnupur district resulted in the tragic deaths of two innocent children. This incident has sparked significant public outrage in the valley regions, escalating tensions in the state. The heartbreaking event occurred in the village of Tronglaobi Awang Leikai in Moirang. The targeted home belonged to Border Security Force (BSF) personnel Oinam Malemangba, who is currently stationed outside the state. At the time of the attack, the family was inside their home. Preliminary investigations suggest that a projectile was fired from nearby hills.

In the attack, Oinam's five-year-old son and a mere five-month-old infant were severely injured and succumbed to their injuries during treatment. His wife, 37-year-old Binita, is fighting for her life in the hospital due to serious shrapnel wounds.

Children's Deaths and Mother's Critical Condition

The children were rushed to a hospital in Imphal, where both tragically passed away during treatment. Binita is currently receiving medical care for her shrapnel injuries. Local residents reported that shortly after the projectile landed, a loud explosion occurred, causing panic throughout the village. This area has long been considered sensitive.

Located near the foothills of Churachandpur district, Tronglaobi is deemed sensitive due to the presence of regions believed to be active with armed groups. Villagers claim that projectiles have previously been fired from elevated positions in the surrounding hills, indicating the use of long-range weapons from several kilometers away.

Protests Erupt, Vehicles Set Ablaze

Tensions have significantly increased in the valley districts following this attack. In response, enraged locals reportedly set fire to two oil tankers and a truck passing through Bishnupur, which were allegedly en route to Churachandpur. A group of protesters also gathered at the Moirang police station, intensifying pressure on local authorities.

Increased Security and Calls for Peace

Security forces have heightened their presence in the area and placed the entire region on 'high alert.' Search operations and surveillance have commenced in the nearby hills to locate the perpetrators. Local legislator Thongam Shanti condemned the attack and demanded strict action against those responsible. Authorities have urged residents to maintain peace and refrain from resorting to violence.

Schools Closed Amid Rising Tensions

As a precaution, many schools in the valley districts remained closed on April 7 due to fears of further unrest. Manipur has been experiencing ethnic tensions and sporadic violence for several months, particularly between the hill and valley regions, posing ongoing challenges for security forces and the administration.
