Tragic Road Accident Leaves Assam University Student Fighting for Life
Accident Sparks Outrage at Assam University
Students alleged that the three accused were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Silchar, Apr 4: A 23-year-old Assam University student is currently in critical condition following a road accident that occurred on March 28, igniting protests on campus and renewed demands for justice.
Rosy Deb, a final-year MBA student from the Business Administration Department, suffered severe injuries after being struck from behind by a fast-moving vehicle at Ambicapatty while returning home from evening classes.
Medical professionals have reported that she has sustained significant head injuries, a broken spine, and requires nearly 80 stitches across various parts of her body. She has since been transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Guwahati for advanced medical care, where her situation remains critical.
The estimated cost for her treatment is between Rs 50–60 lakh, which poses a considerable financial challenge for her family.
In a desperate attempt to seek assistance, students tried to meet Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during his visit to Silchar on Friday.
After failing to gain an audience, they reached out to local BJP leaders, asking them to relay their request for urgent financial support.
Frustration is palpable on campus, with students claiming that the three individuals involved in the accident were intoxicated at the time. The suspects were initially detained by local residents before being handed over to law enforcement.
A group of students also presented a memorandum to Cachar Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia, demanding stringent action against the individuals responsible. Police have confirmed that a case has been filed and an investigation is currently in progress.
“We demand the harshest punishment for the accused. Rosy is an exceptional student and the primary provider for her family. We seek justice for her and urge the Chief Minister to assist,” stated a group of students.
To alleviate the financial burden, students have launched a crowdfunding initiative to aid in her medical expenses.
“Rosy hails from a middle-class background, and her family cannot bear such exorbitant costs. We call upon everyone to contribute and also urge the Chief Minister to provide financial help for her recovery,” they emphasized.
As her condition remains critical, her fellow students are engaged in a dual struggle—to save her life and to ensure justice is served.
