Heartbreaking Incident in Katihar

Patna: A tragic road accident in the Katihar district of Bihar on Saturday evening resulted in the loss of 10 lives and left 25 others injured. President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this calamity.

In a statement shared on her official X account, the President expressed, “The news of the fatalities in the Katihar road accident is profoundly sorrowful. I extend my sympathies to the grieving families and hope for a swift recovery for all the injured.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his sorrow regarding the incident, stating, “The tragedy in Katihar is deeply distressing. My condolences to those mourning their loved ones. I wish for the quick recovery of the injured. An ex gratia payment of Rs. 2 lakh will be provided to the families of each deceased, while the injured will receive Rs. 50,000.”

Bihar's Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences as well, labeling the event as extremely tragic. He announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of the deceased from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and Rs. 50,000 for each injured individual.

The Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure that the injured receive timely and adequate medical care, wishing them a speedy recovery.

The accident took place near Basgada Chowk, under the jurisdiction of Korha Police Station, on National Highway 31, where a bus collided head-on with a pickup vehicle, resulting in significant casualties.

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was traveling at a high speed when it crashed into the pickup van.

The collision was so severe that both vehicles were left in ruins.

Local residents and police quickly assisted in transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities, including Katihar Sadar Hospital.

Hospital staff have been placed on high alert, prioritizing treatment for the victims.

Some of the injured are in critical condition, raising fears that the death toll may increase.

This tragic event has cast a shadow of grief over the area, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
