Jammu, Apr 20: In a devastating road accident on Monday, at least 12 individuals lost their lives and many others sustained injuries in Udhampur district, Jammu and Kashmir.

Authorities confirmed the tragic event, noting that the incident took place close to Jalo village on the Ramnagar–Udhampur road when a bus traveling from Ramnagar to Udhampur encountered an accident.

“Twelve fatalities have been reported, and numerous others are injured. A rescue operation is currently underway, with senior officials from police, civil administration, and SDRF present at the scene,” officials stated.

The precise details surrounding the accident are still being investigated.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office and Lok Sabha MP for the Kathua–Udhampur constituency, mentioned that rescue efforts commenced promptly.

“We fear heavy casualties. All necessary support is being extended. The injured are being transported for medical treatment, and arrangements are being made to airlift those in critical condition. I am in regular contact with local authorities and our team led by Sh Rajinder Sharma,” he shared on social media.

Manoj Sinha, the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed his sorrow regarding the incident.

“The heartbreaking road accident in Udhampur has deeply affected me. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. May they find strength during this difficult time. I am praying for the swift recovery of the injured. I have instructed the district administration, police, SDRF, and Health Department to provide all necessary assistance,” he stated.

Key factors contributing to accidents in the hilly regions of Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Reasi, Kishtwar, and Udhampur include overloading, speeding, reckless driving, and poor road conditions.

To mitigate such incidents, the traffic department has deployed specialized teams in these areas to monitor violations like overloading and speeding, aiming to reduce fatalities caused by human error.
