Guwahati, May 29: A devastating road accident occurred on Friday morning at Tetelia, close to Sonapur, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a female government employee and two medical students.
The victims, all hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, succumbed to their injuries instantly due to the violent impact of the crash.
As per police reports, the Bolero vehicle, registered in Arunachal Pradesh and displaying government identification, was en route to Guwahati when it collided with a stationary truck parked along the roadside within the jurisdiction of Khetri Police Station.
The deceased have been identified as Lingi Barsa, the driver and a doctor, his wife Kunga Dolma, who worked for the Arunachal Pradesh Food and Civil Supplies Department, along with their son and his friend, both pursuing medical studies.
Joint Commissioner of Police, Ankur Jain, provided insights into the incident, stating that the family had departed from Itanagar around 6 am, heading towards Guwahati.
"The accident took place under the jurisdiction of Khetri Police Station, where a truck was parked by the roadside. The Bolero, registered in Arunachal Pradesh, collided with the truck at a high speed. All four individuals in the vehicle died on impact. The victims included the driver, Lingi Barsa, his wife Kunga Dolma, their son, and his friend. Barsa had arranged for accommodation at Arunachal Bhawan in Guwahati, and the family commenced their journey early in the morning," Jain explained.
Investigators looking into the accident indicated that excessive speed might have played a significant role in the crash. They noted the absence of skid marks or any signs of emergency braking at the scene.
"Upon examining the site, we found no evidence that the driver attempted to brake before the collision. Eyewitnesses estimated the vehicle's speed to be around 120 km/h. Based on the evidence collected, we suspect that the driver may have dozed off while driving, although a thorough investigation will confirm the exact cause," Jain added.
Concerns were also raised regarding the truck's presence on the roadside.
However, traffic police clarified that the vehicle was parked outside the designated area and had already been instructed to move as part of a statewide initiative against roadside parking.
Jayanta Sarathi Bora, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), stated that the truck driver had been directed to relocate the vehicle prior to the accident.
"The truck had been flagged by our personnel during an enforcement operation against roadside parking. At approximately 10:45 am, the officer on duty had instructed the driver to move the vehicle. We are conducting similar operations throughout Assam to mitigate unsafe roadside parking. Initial findings suggest that the truck was parked beyond the white line on the road," Bora noted.
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to uncover all details surrounding this tragic event.
