Tragic Racial Attack Claims Life of MBA Student in Dehradun

In a tragic incident in Dehradun, Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, died after being attacked in a racially motivated assault. The attack, which occurred in a local market, has ignited significant anger across northeastern India. Following the incident, police have arrested five suspects, while one remains at large. The Chief Minister of Tripura has assured the victim's family that justice will be pursued vigorously. This incident highlights ongoing issues of racial discrimination and violence in the region.
 

Overview of the Incident

A shocking incident has emerged from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, where a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, Angel Chakma, succumbed to injuries sustained in a racial attack two weeks prior. This event has sparked significant outrage across the northeastern states of India. So far, police have apprehended five suspects in connection with the case.


Details of the Attack

The attack occurred on the evening of December 9 in a local market in the Selakui area of Dehradun. Angel Chakma and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, were shopping when a group of assailants began making racial remarks against them. The attackers repeatedly taunted them by calling them 'Chinese.'


According to Michael, Angel firmly responded to the attackers, stating, 'We are not Chinese; we are Indians. What certificate do we need to prove that?' Following this exchange, the assailants launched a violent attack on the brothers with knives and other sharp weapons.


Death During Treatment

Angel Chakma was admitted to Graphic Era Hospital in critical condition, where he fought for his life for 17 days before passing away on Friday, December 26. In light of his death, police have added murder charges to the case.


Arrests Made, One Suspect Still at Large

SP Pramod Kumar reported that police have arrested five suspects based on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. The arrested individuals, Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas, and Sumit, have been remanded to jail, while two minors have been sent to a juvenile home.


Authorities indicated that one main suspect, who is reportedly from Nepal, remains at large. A reward of ₹25,000 has been announced for information leading to his capture.


Chief Minister Takes Notice

Dr. Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, has reached out to Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami via phone. Saha shared on social media that he received assurances of strict action. He expressed condolences to the victim's family, emphasizing that the perpetrators would not be spared and that justice would be served.
