In China, a man named Li Jiang decided to undergo surgery to lose weight, driven by the desire to impress his girlfriend's family, who preferred a fit son-in-law. His death was attributed to infection and bleeding, highlighting the risks associated with gastric bypass surgery, which can be fatal in 1-2% of cases, especially for patients with a BMI over 40 or pre-existing health conditions. This incident has left his girlfriend devastated.
