In China, a man decided to take the surgical route to shed pounds. Unfortunately, the outcome was far from what he had anticipated. The man, who was significantly overweight, felt pressured to impress his girlfriend's family, who desired a fit son-in-law. To meet their expectations, he underwent surgery, but it ended tragically with his death, drawing widespread attention and concern.

Love and Its Consequences

Li Jiang hailed from a middle-class family in China and met his girlfriend during college. Their love was genuine, and she had no issues with his weight. However, when marriage was discussed, her parents expressed their discontent regarding his size. Determined to change their perception, Li, who weighed over 120 kilograms, ignored medical advice to diet and exercise before surgery due to the approaching wedding date. He opted for gastric bypass surgery at a private clinic, which reduces stomach size to limit food intake. Although the surgery was initially deemed successful, negligence in post-operative care led to dire consequences.

Health Deterioration Post-Surgery

Just a day after the surgery, Li experienced severe vomiting, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Despite being rushed to the hospital, medical staff could not save him. His death was attributed to infection and bleeding, highlighting the risks associated with gastric bypass surgery, which can be fatal in 1-2% of cases, especially for patients with a BMI over 40 or pre-existing health conditions. In Li's case, post-operative infection was the primary cause of his demise. The number of such surgeries is rising in China, but regulations remain lax, with many clinics performing operations without proper licenses, leading to an increase in similar tragic incidents.
