Severe Milk Contamination in Andhra Pradesh

A shocking incident of milk contamination in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has sent shockwaves across the nation. Reports indicate that 16 individuals have lost their lives due to consuming tainted milk, with three others in critical condition. Residents of areas such as Lalacheruvu, Choudeswar Nagar, and Swaroop Nagar began falling ill in February. Symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, urinary retention, and severe kidney failure emerged after consuming the milk. Initial cases were reported on February 22, but investigations revealed that the milk supplied by a local dairy unit was contaminated with ethylene glycol, a toxic substance. Over 20 individuals, including children and the elderly, were hospitalized due to this contamination, leading to a tragic death toll of 16, while three patients remain in the ICU.


The tragedy unfolded when a dairy unit in Narsapuram delivered milk to more than 100 families. Buyers experienced severe symptoms just hours after consumption, necessitating dialysis and ventilator support. Health department investigations confirmed the presence of ethylene glycol in the milk, which can cause permanent damage to kidneys and other organs. Many patients exhibited abnormally high blood urea and serum creatinine levels. This substance is typically used in antifreeze, making its presence in food products extremely hazardous. Following the incident, milk supplies were immediately halted, and door-to-door surveys were conducted in the affected areas.


Findings from the Investigation


Authorities have taken the matter seriously, arresting the suspected milk vendor. The food safety department visited the dairy unit to collect samples of milk, yogurt, ghee, and water. The animal husbandry department also examined animal feed and water sources. Police have registered cases under provisions for unnatural deaths. Senior health officials from Hyderabad are overseeing the treatment of affected individuals. Rapid response teams have been deployed to the area to assess the health of residents, with most reports returning normal; however, fear persists among affected families.


This incident raises serious questions about food safety standards. Milk, a staple in daily life, has turned into a lethal poison, devastating numerous families.
