Quetta, July 31: A devastating methane gas explosion in a coal mine located in the Sorange coalfield of Balochistan, Pakistan, has resulted in the deaths of at least 15 miners, with over two dozen others still trapped, as reported by local news outlets.

Officials indicated that 24 miners were working approximately 4,000 feet underground when the explosion occurred at a private coal mine. Following the blast, a fire broke out, leading to the collapse of the mine's structure.

Additionally, another mine situated nearby was also affected, leaving 12 miners trapped in that location. Chief Inspector of Mines, Muhammad Atif, confirmed that a total of 36 miners were present in both mines at the time of the incident.

Atif noted that the Mines and Minerals Department, along with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), has commenced a rescue operation. As of Thursday night, 21 miners were still unaccounted for while efforts to locate them continued, according to reports.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by the buildup of methane gas at a depth of around 4,000 feet, which ignited and led to the release of dangerous gases within the mine.

In a related incident earlier in May, two miners lost their lives and another was injured in separate coal mining accidents in the Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The first incident occurred at Mine No 5 of Akhorwal coal mines, where two workers were trapped under debris. Rescue teams, along with fellow miners and local residents, managed to retrieve the trapped individuals after a rescue operation lasting nearly two and a half hours, as reported by another local daily.

In a separate occurrence, a miner died while working in a coal mine in the Chaparmashti area. There has been growing concern among local residents and labor organizations regarding the inadequate safety measures in Pakistan's coal mines, prompting calls for government intervention to address these critical issues.
