Cape Town: In a tragic incident, three gunmen opened fire at a house party in KwaMakhutha, South Africa, resulting in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including a woman believed to be expecting, as reported by local authorities on Wednesday.

The shooting occurred late Tuesday night, approximately 30 kilometers south of Durban, injuring three additional attendees.

Witnesses reported that the assailants entered the venue and began shooting indiscriminately. Ten victims, including the pregnant woman, succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while an eleventh person was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Details regarding the condition of the injured individuals have not been disclosed by the police.

Authorities are actively pursuing the suspects, but no arrests have been made thus far.

While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, police indicated that some attendees were previously known to law enforcement due to ongoing investigations into criminal activities. Further information on these investigations has not been released.

South Africa grapples with alarmingly high rates of violent crime, with police statistics revealing 5,427 homicides in the three months from April to June, averaging nearly 60 murders daily.

Gun-related homicides are prevalent, and experts have long pointed to the significant number of illegal firearms as a major contributing factor.

The bodies of some victims from the recent shooting were covered with white sheets outside the residence where the tragedy unfolded, as police cordoned off the area with yellow tape for forensic examination.

Investigators are also looking into whether a vehicle that was set ablaze near the scene is linked to the shooting.
