New Delhi, Jun 11: Three Indian seafarers aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello, who were initially reported missing following a US military strike on the vessel near the coast of Oman, have now been confirmed dead, as stated by Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday.

In a social media update, Sonowal expressed his sorrow over the tragic event, stating, "It is deeply unfortunate to learn of the tragic incident aboard the Palau-flagged MT Settebello. Sadly, three Indian seafarers initially reported missing are now confirmed dead after bodies have been located and identified.”

He further noted that the government is dedicated to assisting the families of the deceased and has instructed officials to facilitate the prompt repatriation of the rescued crew members and the swift return of the deceased's remains for their final rites.

On Wednesday, India summoned the US charge d'affaires to express strong disapproval of the military strike on the commercial vessel, which resulted in three of the 24 Indian crew members being reported missing.

The US Central Command confirmed the strike, stating that the vessel had breached the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports by attempting to transport oil from Iran.

According to their statement, "The US Central Command disabled Palau-flagged M/T Settebello as it transited the Gulf of Oman. A US aircraft fired precision munitions into the ship's engine room after the crew repeatedly failed to comply with directions from American forces."

In its statement on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condemned the attack.

"We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and three Indians are reportedly missing," it stated.
