Landslide Incident Overview

In Wayanad district, Kerala, the death toll from a landslide at a tunnel construction site has risen to seven. Rescue teams are actively searching for one missing worker. The landslide occurred earlier this week near the Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi twin-tunnel project during construction activities. Continuous rainfall and unstable ground conditions have hampered rescue operations. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire and rescue services, police, and other agencies are present at the site.


Search and Rescue Efforts

Officials reported that the number of fatalities increased after another body was discovered, while the search operation is now focused solely on locating the missing worker. Heavy machinery, sniffer dogs, and specialized rescue equipment are being utilized to clear debris and search the affected area. The victims were reportedly workers associated with the tunnel construction project. This incident has raised concerns about the risks of landslides during the monsoon season, particularly around infrastructure projects in hilly regions of Wayanad.


Government Response

Authorities have stated that the rescue mission will continue until the missing employee is found. Meanwhile, the state government has initiated an investigation to determine the causes of the landslide. The incident occurred on July 7, as part of the Anakkampoyil-Meppadi tunnel project aimed at improving connectivity between Wayanad and Kozhikode districts. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan previously emphasized that locating the missing workers is the government's top priority.


Casualties and Injuries

Additionally, it has been reported that among the ten injured individuals, three have been discharged from the hospital, four are in stable condition and receiving treatment, while three remain in intensive care, with two in critical condition.
