Mumbai, Aug 12: A devastating landslide occurred early Wednesday morning in the Ghatkopar locality of Mumbai, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals and leaving four to five others feared trapped. Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue operations to locate and assist those buried under the rubble.

The incident took place around 3:48 a.m. at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, as reported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Mumbai Fire Brigade.

Initial assessments suggest that a section of a nearby hill collapsed, causing debris to cascade onto two to three homes. Authorities initially estimated that five to six individuals might be trapped as a result of the landslide.

In response to the disaster, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde and Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs) Dr. Avinash Dhakne visited the site to evaluate the situation and oversee the ongoing rescue efforts.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Ganesh Shinde confirmed the fatalities and indicated that several individuals remain unaccounted for under the debris.

Shinde stated, “Rescue operations are in progress, with emergency response teams and local officials working diligently at the scene. While we cannot provide an exact count at this moment, it is believed that three to four individuals may still be trapped.”

He also mentioned that the bodies of the deceased have been transported to a hospital for further examination.

“The Ghatkopar Police will initiate the necessary legal proceedings and conduct a thorough investigation into the incident,” he added.

Rescue efforts are being coordinated by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Two individuals have been hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the landslide. They have been identified as 18-year-old Sohel Ansari, who has a head injury, and 14-year-old Mohamad Ansari, who suffered a back injury. Both are reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities are continuing their efforts to clear the debris and search for any additional survivors. More updates will follow.
