A prominent technology entrepreneur and influential figure in Austin's start-up ecosystem, Joshua Baer, has tragically passed away following a private jet crash in Texas. Baer, who served as the CEO of the technology incubator Capital Factory, was one of six individuals aboard a NetJets-operated Cessna Citation Latitude that crash-landed near Laredo on Tuesday night. The aircraft caught fire after landing on Texas State Highway Loop 20 shortly after 10 PM local time.

Reports indicate that air traffic controllers were alerted to a mechanical issue with the plane before communication was lost. Flight tracking data revealed that the jet had taken off from San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, around 6:18 PM local time, en route to Austin, Texas, before diverting to Laredo. According to police, the aircraft landed on the highway, collided with a moving vehicle, and scattered debris across multiple lanes, leading to the closure of traffic in both directions. While five passengers survived and were transported to a hospital, one individual in a passing vehicle sustained injuries. Additionally, five first responders received treatment for smoke inhalation. The FBI and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating the cause of the crash.

Baer, a father of three, was instrumental in the development of Austin's tech sector and was affectionately known as the 'Godfather' of the city's start-up community. Bryan Chambers, president of Capital Factory, expressed his sorrow in a statement, calling Baer a 'fearless leader, a brilliant partner, and a dear friend to many.' Witness Zayra Garza, who witnessed the crash while driving colleagues home, described the scene as resembling 'something out of a movie,' expressing her concern about the potential for an explosion due to the fire.
