Safety Concerns Arise from Recent Incidents in Delhi

Two separate incidents that occurred in Delhi on Sunday have once again highlighted serious concerns regarding the safety of old buildings and fire preparedness. In the New Usmanpur area of northeast Delhi, a roof collapse tragically claimed the lives of a couple, while their young son narrowly escaped unharmed. Meanwhile, in Rajouri Garden, western Delhi, a fire broke out in a four-story residential building, prompting two women and a three-year-old girl to use a saree to escape to safety.

Roof Collapse Claims Lives in Usmanpur

According to police reports, the incident took place around 10 PM in JP Nagar, within the jurisdiction of the New Usmanpur police station. The roof slab of a single-story house suddenly collapsed, trapping the couple beneath the debris.

Emergency services, including police and firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene. The victims were rescued from the rubble and transported to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Fortunately, their child, who was inside the house at the time, survived the incident.

Identities of the Victims Revealed

The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Tinku and his 30-year-old wife, Urmila. The tragic event occurred in a rented accommodation near Hansraj Dairy in Ganwari Extension, where the couple resided.

Initial reports indicate that Tinku, originally from Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, worked as a confectioner in Delhi. The exact cause of the roof collapse is still under investigation, with authorities noting that if the building had been multi-storied, the disaster could have been far worse.

Fire Incident in Rajouri Garden

In a separate incident, three individuals, including a three-year-old girl, managed to escape unharmed from a fire that erupted in a four-story residential building in Rajouri Garden on Sunday evening. Fire officials reported that they received news of the blaze around 4:10 PM, prompting the dispatch of five fire engines to the scene. The fire was brought under control by approximately 4:40 PM.

Creative Escape from Fire

Before firefighters could reach the building, two women aged 62 and 32, along with the young girl, ingeniously used a saree as a makeshift rope to descend from the second floor, escaping the smoke-filled building. Fire department officials revealed that the fire originated in a shaft located in the basement, where a significant amount of debris had accumulated. Flames and thick smoke spread to parts of the first, second, and third floors of the residential building, covering an area of about 300 square yards.
