Itanagar, Sept 29: A soldier from the Assam Rifles lost his life and four others sustained injuries when their patrol team was allegedly attacked by militants near the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district on Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred around 6:30 AM close to Nampong Nallah in the Nampong circle, while the 21 Assam Rifles personnel were conducting patrols in an area undergoing border fencing, according to officials.

The deceased has been identified as Havildar Jangkhokai Kuki, aged 42. The injured soldiers are currently being evacuated for medical care, with updates on their conditions pending.

Initial reports indicate that the patrol team came under fire from suspected militants, prompting security forces to ramp up operations in the vicinity.

Changlang's Superintendent of Police, Kirli Padu, confirmed that he had received reports regarding the incident and instructed the officer-in-charge of the local police station to gather more information.

“We have been informed about the incident along the India-Myanmar border and have directed the OC of Changlang police station to collect relevant details,” Padu stated.

While preliminary findings suggest the involvement of militants from the NSCN (K-YA), there has been no official verification regarding the identity of the attackers.

In a show of respect, the Assam Rifles honored Kuki through a post on their official social media, extending condolences to his family.

“Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General Assam Rifles & All Ranks of Assam Rifles pay solemn tribute to Hav Jangkhokai Kuki who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at Changlang, Arunachal Pradesh on 29 Sep 2026 and offer deep condolences to the family of our Brave Soldier,” the post read.

The India-Myanmar border in Changlang is known to be sensitive, with various insurgent groups operating in the area and across the international border.
