Dubai, Jul 14: In a tragic event, one Indian crew member lost his life and eight others, including six Indians, were injured due to Iranian missile strikes on UAE tankers in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman on Tuesday.

The UAE Ministry of Defence reported that two Iranian cruise missiles targeted its tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, while they were navigating through the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, which falls within Omani waters.

According to the ministry, the deceased was aboard the Mombasa tanker, while the injuries sustained by the eight individuals included four serious cases.

The injured group consists of six Indian nationals and two from Ukraine.

The Indian Embassy in the UAE expressed condolences over the "tragic loss" of the seafarer, stating, "We are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with local authorities to provide assistance to the injured and their families," in a social media update.

The attack resulted in significant damage to both tankers due to fires that erupted on board, although these have since been controlled, as per the UAE ministry's statement.

The UAE condemned the "blatant attack," labeling it a "serious violation and a clear breach of international law."

Furthermore, the UAE asserted its right to respond to this escalation and to implement necessary measures to safeguard its territory, citizens, and residents.

The ministry emphasized its readiness to address any potential threats.

In a related development, the US conducted strikes on Iran earlier on Tuesday after President Donald Trump announced the reinstatement of a blockade on Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that other vessels may be charged for safe passage.

In retaliation, Iran targeted Bahrain, Jordan, and the two UAE-associated tankers.

Amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia, 11 Indian nationals have reportedly lost their lives, with several seafarers rescued from attacked ships and tankers.

Last month, three Indian sailors were killed in a US strike on the Palau-flagged tanker MT Settebello.
