Tragic Incident in Mumbai: Man Falls into Open Manhole During Heavy Rain

A tragic incident in Mumbai's Sakinaka area has led to the death of a 55-year-old man who fell into an open manhole during heavy rain. Mayor Ritu Tawde has criticized the BMC for its negligence, questioning the lack of safety measures despite previous contracts for manhole covers. In response, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has taken decisive action, blacklisting the contractor and suspending four officials. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the incident, with a report due in seven days. This incident raises serious concerns about public safety during adverse weather conditions.
 

Tragic Accident in Sakinaka, Mumbai

A deeply saddening incident has emerged from the Sakinaka area of Mumbai. A 55-year-old man, Aslam Isaak Sheikh, tragically lost his life after falling into an open manhole while walking on Khairani Road amidst heavy rainfall. Reports indicate that he was talking on his mobile phone at the time of the accident. Workers nearby attempted to shout warnings to him, but he lost his balance and fell into the manhole. Despite the efforts of the Mumbai Fire Brigade and BMC personnel to rescue him, they were unable to save his life.


Mayor Ritu Tawde Criticizes BMC Administration

In response to this heartbreaking incident, Mumbai's Mayor Ritu Tawde expressed her strong discontent with the BMC administration's negligence. She stated, "This is an extremely unfortunate event. What has the administration been doing since the contract for covering manholes was awarded two years ago? Why was this work being carried out during a red alert and heavy rain?" The Mayor has announced a compensation of 10 lakh rupees for the victim's family.


Commissioner Ashwini Bhide Takes Action

Taking the matter seriously, BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has initiated significant action against those responsible for the negligence. The contractor involved has been blacklisted for failing to ensure safety measures at the time of the incident. Additionally, four BMC officials have been suspended immediately. Those suspended include Dhanaji Herlekar (Assistant Commissioner, L Ward), Deepak Chougule (Deputy Engineer), Abhijit Chougule (Junior Engineer), and Uttam Patil (Assistant Engineer).


High-Level Committee to Investigate, Report Due in 7 Days

The BMC Commissioner has established a high-level investigation committee, chaired by the Additional Municipal Commissioner, to thoroughly examine the incident. This committee has been instructed to submit its report within seven days. Furthermore, to prevent such accidents in the future, it has been mandated that barricades must be erected around manhole work sites, and a complete safety inspection of all manholes in Mumbai will be conducted within the next eight days.
