Tragic Incident in Maharashtra: Medical Student Commits Suicide Amidst Financial Pressure
Heartbreaking Event in Nanded District
A tragic incident has emerged from Nanded district in Maharashtra, where a second-year student at Padma Shri Shyamrao Kadam Homeopathic Medical College, 25-year-old Aakanksha Gaikwad, took her own life by hanging in her hostel room. This heartbreaking event occurred on Friday in the hostel located in the Hadko area, leaving the community in mourning.
Aakanksha hailed from Wajegaon in Nanded and her parents worked as laborers at a brick kiln. She had been residing in the hostel for the past couple of years, paying a monthly rent of approximately ₹2,500. In a complaint to the police, her father, Munjaji Gaikwad, alleged that the hostel owner, who is a local leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a former opposition leader in the municipal corporation, Jivan Ghogre Patil, had been pressuring and mentally harassing his daughter regarding outstanding hostel fees for the last 8 to 10 months.
According to her father, the constant demands for fees and harassment led Aakanksha to a point of distress that prompted her to take this drastic step. Following the complaint, the Nanded Rural Police registered a case against Jivan Ghogre Patil for abetting suicide under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigating officer stated that over 40 girls reside in the hostel under a 'quota-based' system, and a thorough investigation is underway.
Family members have raised concerns about suspicious aspects of the incident, such as the bed and the circumstances of the hanging, but the police are currently treating it as a suicide. This incident has once again highlighted issues surrounding hostel fees, mental pressure, and the living conditions of medical students. Student organizations and local residents are demanding justice and calling for strict action against those responsible.
This incident is part of a troubling trend related to financial strain and pressure in medical education, which society and authorities need to address seriously.
