Maihar (Madhya Pradesh), July 4: In a heartbreaking incident, three villagers lost their lives and another sustained serious injuries while attempting to rescue a bull that had fallen into an abandoned well in Madhya Pradesh's Maihar district, as reported by local authorities on Saturday.

The tragic event unfolded in Kharmaseda village, located within the jurisdiction of the Amarpatan police station, leaving the local community in deep sorrow.

Initial investigations suggest that the well, which had been closed for an extended period, contained insufficient oxygen and was filled with hazardous gases, leading to rapid suffocation of those who entered.

Before the police arrived, villagers undertook a frantic rescue effort, using ropes and iron hooks to extract the victims from the approximately 35-foot-deep well.

Authorities later retrieved the bodies, which were sent for autopsy, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of death.

Amarpatan Sub-Divisional Police Officer Khyati Mishra stated, "The incident occurred as villagers tried to save a bull that had fallen into the well. Three individuals succumbed to suffocation, while one was rescued and is receiving medical care. A case has been filed, and the definitive cause of death will be established following the post-mortem and forensic examination."

According to police reports, the incident transpired around 8:30 p.m. on Friday near the residence of Ramnivas Kushwaha, where villagers heard the bull's distress calls from the well.

Initially, two men descended into the well using a rope to rescue the animal but soon lost consciousness due to the toxic air.

In a desperate attempt to save them, two additional villagers entered the well one after the other, only to be similarly affected by the poisonous environment.

The deceased have been identified as Krishna Kumar Yadav (28), Virendra Yadav (47), and Rahul Yadav (34).

The sole survivor, Ramchandra Yadav (42), was first taken to Amarpatan Civil Hospital and later referred to the district hospital in Satna for advanced treatment.

Dr. Himanshu Pandey from Amarpatan Civil Hospital reported, "Four individuals were brought to the hospital. Three were declared dead on arrival, while Ramchandra was admitted in critical condition. He was stabilized after initial treatment and transferred for further care."
