Shocking Family Tragedy in Kanpur

In a heartbreaking incident in Kanpur, a 45-year-old jeweler is accused of murdering his younger son and seriously injuring his elder son before taking poison and hanging himself at home. This information was disclosed by the police on Friday.

Authorities reported that the tragic events unfolded in Hashimpur village, located within the Araul police jurisdiction. The deceased have been identified as Ajay Katiyar, aged 45, and his seven-year-old son, Shubh. Meanwhile, the injured child, Rudra, aged 12, is currently receiving medical treatment.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi, Ajay lived with his two sons. He explained that Ajay initially attacked both children with a brick, leaving them for dead. Following this, he consumed poison and subsequently hanged himself.

The police revealed that a purported suicide note found at the scene indicates severe emotional distress. In the note addressed to his father, Ajay expressed that there should only be as many children as one can adequately care for. He wrote, 'I cannot leave them at the mercy of others, so I am taking them with me.'

The incident came to light on Friday morning when Ajay failed to open his jewelry shop. His father, Ram Shankar Katiyar, went to check on him and repeatedly called out, but received no response.

Ram Shankar then informed neighbors and Ajay's elder brother, Chandraprakash. When the police forcibly opened the door, they discovered both children lying on the blood-soaked floor, while Ajay was found unconscious nearby. All three were transported to the Bilhaur Community Health Center, where doctors pronounced Ajay and his younger son dead.

Authorities noted that Rudra sustained severe head injuries and was referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital, where his condition remains critical. The police have recovered a blood-stained brick, a bottle of poison, a glass, and a rope from the room.

CCTV footage captured Ajay sweeping outside his home at 6:41 AM, after which no further activity was recorded. Station Officer Janardan Singh stated that preliminary investigations suggest Ajay had been suffering from mental stress for an extended period. Notably, his wife, Alka, passed away exactly two years ago on the same date.
