Dhaka: A tragic event has unfolded in Bangladesh, where a young Hindu boy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle during a robbery attempt, as reported by local news outlets on Monday.

The incident took place on Sunday evening in the Lalpol region of Feni district along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

The victim, identified as 16-year-old Shanto Kumar Saha, was reportedly thrown onto the road by the assailants and subsequently hit by an oncoming vehicle, resulting in his immediate death.

According to relatives and witnesses, Shanto was waiting in his autorickshaw, helping a passenger with their belongings near the Miyaji filling station in Lalpol. Approximately thirty minutes later, he was attacked by unidentified robbers who beat him and threw him under a culvert while attempting to steal his vehicle.

After regaining his footing, Shanto pursued the robbers, but they pushed him onto the highway, where he was fatally struck by a vehicle.

Feni's Additional Superintendent of Police, Nishat Tabassum, confirmed the incident, stating, "Upon receiving the report, police retrieved the body from the scene and transported it to the Feni General Hospital mortuary."

Shanto's family began searching for him when they could not reach him, and they later discovered his body after receiving information from a local auto-rickshaw driver. His cousin, Nipul Das, mentioned that reviewing CCTV footage from the area could help identify the attackers.

Another cousin, Nipa Rani Das, recounted her last encounter with Shanto before Iftar, noting that he had a passenger to pick up and that there were suspicious individuals nearby. She believes they targeted him during the quiet period of Iftar to hijack his autorickshaw.

This incident underscores the ongoing and troubling trend of violence against Hindu communities in Bangladesh, particularly under the newly established Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government. It mirrors the pattern of violence seen during the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, which also experienced a rise in attacks on minorities, especially Hindus.
