Violence Against Minorities Escalates in Bangladesh

Dhaka: A tragic incident occurred in Sadar Upazila, Rajbari district, where a Hindu man was deliberately run over by a vehicle, as reported by local media on Saturday.

This incident adds to the alarming trend of violence against minority groups in Bangladesh.

The victim, identified as 30-year-old Ripon Saha, was employed at Karim Filling Station located near Goalanda Mor.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, as reported by a prominent newspaper, the incident unfolded on Friday when Saha demanded payment for fuel, leading the driver to run him over, resulting in immediate death.

Khondkar Ziaur Rahman, the officer-in-charge of Rajbari Sadar Police Station, confirmed that authorities seized the vehicle involved and arrested its owner, Abul Hashem, a former treasurer of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's Rajbari unit, at his home on Friday afternoon.

The driver, Kamal Hossain, was also apprehended in Banibhah Nijpara village.

"This was not an accident. We will pursue a murder charge. The victim stood in front of the car after they refused to pay, and they ran him over before escaping," Rahman stated, as quoted by bdnews24.

Employees at Karim Filling Station reported that a black Land Cruiser filled up with fuel worth 5,000 Bangladeshi Taka early Friday.

When Saha attempted to prevent the vehicle from leaving without payment, the driver ran him over and fled the scene, killing him instantly.

This incident marks the tenth killing in just one month, underscoring a troubling rise in violence against Hindu communities in Bangladesh.

Earlier this week, another Hindu man was brutally attacked and killed in Daganbhuiyan upazila, Feni district, according to local reports.

The body of 27-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Samir Das was discovered in a crop field in Jagatpur village on Monday.

On January 9, India expressed serious concerns regarding the ongoing violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh, emphasizing its commitment to monitoring the situation and hoping for decisive action against such communal violence.

Under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh has seen a rise in violence against minorities, provoking outrage among citizens and human rights organizations worldwide.
