Agar-Malwa (Madhya Pradesh), Sep 19: A tragic accident claimed the lives of eight devotees, including three children and two women, when their vehicle was swept away by a rapidly rising stream near the Maa Baglamukhi Temple in Nalkheda, as reported by local authorities on Saturday.

The victims, hailing from Odisha, had traveled from Ujjain to visit the temple, according to Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Soni.

The incident occurred as the car attempted to navigate the swollen stream, which had become treacherous due to heavy rainfall.

Initial investigations indicate that the driver may have been in a hurry to cross the stream, leading to the vehicle being overwhelmed by the water's force.

Local weather reports indicated that the region experienced 3.7 inches of rainfall within the last 24 hours, with the heaviest downpour occurring overnight.

What began as a routine pilgrimage turned into a devastating event due to the sudden surge in water levels.

"The incident resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, comprising three children, two women, and three men," stated Soni.

In response to the tragedy, local officials and rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene to locate the vehicle and assist the victims.

The car, identified as a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso with registration number MP 13 AF 7135, was found during the rescue efforts.

"The deceased were from Odisha and had traveled from Ujjain for the temple visit. Their identities are currently being verified," the Superintendent added.

A crowd gathered at the site as police and rescue teams worked diligently to manage the situation.

Authorities are gathering information to understand the circumstances surrounding the accident, while efforts to identify the deceased and notify their families are ongoing, along with necessary legal procedures.
